Breast Ultrasound Screening

Doing MORE for your breast health is Smart Prevention!

Welcome to HerScan

The power of an ultrasound can increase the detection of breast cancer from approximately 48% to 97%, particularly in women with dense breasts.(Dr. Nancy Cappello, Berg Study). Non-invasive Breast Ultrasound Screenings are capable of detecting cancers that cannot be found by mammography and physical exams alone. Sometimes mammograms and physical exams just are not enough, particularly in women with dense breasts.

Breast ultrasound screening

Mammography while great for many women, is not the end all or be all.

Nearly half of American women have dense breast tissue, but many may not be getting the additional screenings they need.

What are the benefits of a Breast Ultrasound?

Breast ultrasound has been shown to increase early detection rates of breast cancer from approximately 48% to 97% in women with dense breasts. Ultrasound is capable of detecting cancers that cannot be found by mammography and physical exams, making it an excellent procedure to add to your normal women’s health routine. Breast ultrasounds are also painless and use no compression or radiation.

What should I expect the day of my Ultrasound appointment?

On the day of the health event, please dress comfortably. Once you arrive at the venue location, look for HerScan’s pink signs to point you towards the health event location. Upon arriving to the health event, you will be asked to fill out a brief medical history. Once completed, our female medical sonographer will provide you with a paper drape before beginning the exam. An ultrasound probe with warm gel will be used to begin screening both breasts and the axilla (armpit) area. After the completion of your screening test, your test will be read by our board-certified radiologist. From that point, your results will be emailed to the email address you provide on your medical form.

Do you accept Insurance or Medicare?

At this time, HerScan does not accept Medicare, Medicaid or any third-party insurance. Many of the women who use our service will provide their HerScan payment receipt to their insurance companies so that the cost may be applied towards their deductible. Most FSA and HSA cards can be accepted, as long as they have a major credit card label on it.

What is the cost of HerScan’s Breast Ultrasound?

Your HerScan screening includes a scan of both breasts with the axilla (underarm area), the Radiologist Reading Fee, and U.S. postage to mail results direct to you, all for one payment of $295 (a $1100 value). Effective January 1, 2025: Pricing for NY, CA, and HI is $325. Payment is due at the time of service. We accept major credit/debit cards and cash.

No prescription or referral from a doctor is required to utilize HerScan’s screening service.

What forms of payment do you accept?

HerScan accepts all major credit and debit cards and cash.

How long until I receive my Ultrasound results?

Once the Board-Certified Radiologist reads your images, you will receive your completed report and images within 7-10 business days via email with a link directing you to our online client portal to access your results.

What is Dense Breast Tissue?

Dense breast tissue, as opposed to fatty breast tissue, is composed of more fibrous or glandular tissue than fat, making it much harder to read on a mammogram. Approximately 50% of the women in the United States have dense breast tissue. On a mammogram, dense tissue appears white, while cancerous tumors also appear white, making it nearly impossible to "see" the tumor. It's like trying to find a snowball in a snowstorm. This is why ultrasounds are so critical for women with dense breast tissue, as nearly half of all cancers are missed with mammography alone.

Are Breast Ultrasounds painful like a Mammogram?

No, not at all! Breast ultrasounds use a wand with warm gel to glide over your skin. There’s no pain and no compression.

Does a Breast Ultrasound replace Mammography?

It's important to know that a Breast Ultrasound does not replace a mammogram. HerScan advocates that you do everything in your power to protect your health. While ultrasounds can see a lot of things that mammography can miss, mammography can pick up microcalcifications. Both mammography and ultrasounds are more powerful when used together, not in place of one another. On a mammogram, dense tissue appears white, while cancerous tumors also appear white, making it nearly impossible to see the tumor.

Where is HerScan located?

HerScan is a mobile breast screening service, meaning we travel all over the country to hundreds of different cities to hold our health events. We are headquartered in Tampa Bay, Florida.

Can I be screened while currently breastfeeding?

Breast ultrasound can be performed safely while a woman is lactating. Ultrasound will NOT affect the quantity or quality of breast milk. Weaning is NOT needed to have a breast ultrasound.
